B.C. Lions +120 over Saskatoon

7:00 PM EST. The defending Grey Cup champions will raise a banner before kickoff, and that ceremony alone is enough to create a difficult handicapping situation. Saskatchewan deserves respect after last season's title run, but championship teams often face new challenges the following year, especially when key contributors depart during the offseason. The Roughriders experienced significant roster turnover on the defensive side of the ball, losing several important veterans through retirement and free agency. Replacing experience, leadership and production is rarely seamless, particularly in the opening game when timing and communication are still being established. Saskatchewan may eventually develop into another contender, but there are legitimate questions about whether this version is as strong as the one that lifted the Grey Cup.

BC arrives with far fewer concerns. The Lions return one of the CFL's most explosive offenses led by Nathan Rourke, who put together an MVP-caliber campaign after throwing for more than 5,200 yards and 31 touchdowns while adding another 564 yards and 10 scores on the ground. Few quarterbacks in the league can stress a defense the way Rourke can, and he has no shortage of weapons. Keon Hatcher remains one of the CFL's premier receivers after leading the league in receiving yards last season, while BC's offensive depth gives opposing defenses multiple problems to solve on every snap. This is a group capable of scoring quickly and forcing opponents out of their comfort zone.

The Lions may be even more dangerous because of their improvements on defense. Mathieu Betts remains one of the CFL's elite pass rushers after recording 15 sacks last season, and BC added experienced pieces to strengthen all three levels of the defense. The result is a roster that appears more balanced than the one that reached the West Final a year ago. Saskatchewan will enjoy the energy of opening night and a passionate home crowd, but value is about price, not popularity. BC enters this matchup with the more stable roster, the league's most dynamic quarterback and a defense capable of creating pressure. At plus money, the Lions offer the better side in what looks like a far more even matchup than the odds suggest. An outright BC victory would not be a surprise—it may simply be the value play.
