Green Bay -3½ -110 over Carolina
8:20 PM EST. We don't like Green Bay. Let's get that out of the way immediately. The Packers have done absolutely nothing to earn anyone's trust, particularly when they're laying points. Last week, they managed a grand total of 19 rushing yards against a Detroit defense that has been about as difficult to move the ball against as a marching band. Green Bay looked awful, and now we're supposed to lay 3½ points with them? That's a tough sell, and the market knows it. But that's precisely what makes this game interesting.
Carolina was a 2½-point home favorite over Tampa Bay last week, and the market was all over the Panthers. What followed was a 43-13 demolition that left Carolina looking like it had wandered into the wrong stadium. Six turnovers, five sacks allowed, and an offense that couldn't get out of its own way. Ordinarily, that kind of performance would send bettors running in the opposite direction, but the market has become increasingly sophisticated about the zigzag. Everyone knows that teams coming off embarrassing losses can offer value the following week. Carolina was the popular side last week, got destroyed, and now the natural inclination is to grab the points against a Green Bay team that hasn't exactly been lighting the world on fire.
There's another layer here. Underdogs have been cashing tickets left, right, and center in primetime games this season, and the betting public has taken notice. The days of blindly trusting a favorite on Thursday night are long gone, especially when that favorite is Green Bay and the number is sitting at 3½. That hook above the key number of three is enough to make bettors uncomfortable, and understandably so. Throw in the Packers' dreadful showing against Detroit, their inability to establish a running game, and their offensive line concerns, and there's very little about Green Bay that makes laying points appealing. Carolina plus the points becomes an easy argument to make, and that's exactly the problem.
We're not interested in predicting which team has the better offense, which defense matches up better, or which coach has a more creative game plan. That's the same recycled bullshit fodder the talking heads use every week to justify whichever side they've already decided to take. Both teams are coming off ugly performances, both are operating on a short week, and neither has earned the benefit of the doubt. This isn't about revenge, historical trends, the frozen tundra, or anything else that makes for entertaining television. It's about the number, the market's perception of these two teams, and what is most likely to determine the outcome on a Thursday night when neither side has much time to prepare.
And that brings us to turnovers. On a short week, with both teams struggling and offensive lines being shuffled around, the team that protects the football is likely to be the team that wins and covers. Carolina is coming off a six-turnover disaster, and Bryce Young is dealing with the aftermath of his worst performance of the season. Green Bay hasn't been much better, but we're going to put our money on the Pack to make fewer costly mistakes than Young. The Packers don't have to look good, dominate statistically, or convince anyone they're a trustworthy favorite. They simply have to take better care of the football than Carolina. In a game where neither team inspires much confidence, thus, we'll spot the uncomfortable 3½ points with Green Bay.
