8:07 PM EST. We faded the Sharkies last night in Chicago, citing that after 80 games of grinding, battling, and pouring everything into the tank, that tank was empty. For a brief moment, it looked like San Jose might prove us wrong. They jumped out to a 2-0 lead and showed some early life. But then reality set in. They gave up five unanswered goals in a 5-2 loss, and the effort faded just as we anticipated.

Now comes the final act.

San Jose must travel to Winnipeg — of all places — to play their last game of the season. After 80 games of blood, sweat, and tears, after fighting for a playoff spot right down to the wire and coming up short, they now face a meaningless finale on the road in a cold building against a motivated opponent. You have to seriously question what kind of emotional energy they have left. This is a team that just had its season end, and now they’re being asked to suit up one more time in a hostile environment with nothing to play for.

That’s a tough sell.

Winnipeg, on the other hand, has one game left as well, and they’re coming off three straight losses — to Philadelphia, Vegas, and Utah — in which they were outscored 18-6. No team wants to walk off its home ice after that kind of stretch. Pride matters. Professional athletes do not want their final memory of the season to be a string of ugly losses in front of their own fans and tonight, they have the perfect opponent.

The Jets couldn’t have handpicked a better matchup than a San Jose team that is emotionally drained, physically worn down, and simply ready for the season to be over. The Sharks will be there in body, but the urgency is gone. Winnipeg, meanwhile, figures to deliver one last strong effort on home ice, looking to finish the season with some dignity and send their fans home with a positive memory.

This is about motivation, pride, and emotional energy — and those edges clearly belong to the home side. Look for the Jets to respond one last time this year and put away the Sharkies.
