Carolina -½ +115 over Montreal
NHL play Offs Game 3
Series Tied 1-1
7:05 PM EST (Regulation only)The first two games of this series produced a split, but the final scores have created a perception that doesn't accurately reflect how these teams have played. Montreal won Game 1 by a 6-2 score and Carolina needed overtime in Game 2 to avoid falling into an 0-2 hole. The scoreboard suggests a tightly contested series. The underlying numbers suggest something entirely different.
The Canadiens have been one of the best underdog stories of these playoffs and have rewarded bettors repeatedly in the road dog role. They deserve credit for that. However, this is a spot where the market appears to be placing too much emphasis on results and not enough on the actual flow of play.
At five-on-five, Carolina has controlled this series. The Hurricanes have dominated puck possession, spent significantly more time in the offensive zone, generated more scoring opportunities and owned the shot-attempt battle. In virtually every meaningful possession metric, Carolina has been the superior team. The Canadiens have capitalized on their opportunities, received timely saves and benefited from some favorable puck luck, but those are difficult advantages to count on repeatedly against a team that consistently drives play.
The Hurricanes are built to win this way. Their entire identity revolves around controlling possession, forcing opponents to defend for extended stretches and relentlessly attacking in waves. That formula has not changed through two games and there is little reason to believe it changes tonight. Whether the game is played in Raleigh or Montreal, Carolina's style travels because it is driven by puck possession and territorial advantage rather than emotion or home-ice energy.
Montreal's home crowd will be electric and the Bell Centre will provide a tremendous atmosphere, but enthusiasm doesn't erase matchup disadvantages. The Canadiens are still being forced to spend too much time defending, and eventually that becomes a difficult recipe to sustain. Carolina is creating pressure on virtually every shift and the chances continue to favor the Hurricanes by a significant margin.
In Games 1 and 2, the betting price dictated the play. Montreal was receiving a generous underdog return and that created value despite the underlying disadvantages. Tonight the situation is reversed. Carolina is being offered at a far more reasonable number despite continuing to be the team carrying the play.
The Hurricanes may not win every game they outplay their opponent, but when one team is consistently controlling possession, controlling the offensive zone and generating the bulk of the quality chances, that's the side we want to back. Carolina has been the better team through two games and is likely to be the better team again tonight.
