More troubling is the growing fly-ball tendency, which has led to more home runs — exactly the wrong trait to bring into a matchup against a power-heavy lineup like Atlanta’s.

Now he faces a Braves offense that profiles as a top-tier unit and has historically handled him well. This isn’t the type of opponent that lets struggling pitchers ease into the season. When contact quality rises and the ball starts leaving the yard, innings can unravel quickly, and Civale’s recent track record suggests that risk is very real.

On the other side, José Suárez gets the ball for Atlanta, and while he’s not being asked to carry the rotation, he’s shown he can deliver solid innings when given the opportunity. Suárez will be making his first start of the 2026 season and is likely auditioning to hold a spot until Spencer Strider returns from the injured list. In his lone start with Atlanta last season, he allowed two runs over seven innings and struck out nine, showing the ability to miss bats and work efficiently.

That’s all the Braves need here — a competent outing from Suárez and the offense will do the rest. Atlanta’s lineup depth, home-field advantage, and bullpen strength create a clear path to separation against vulnerable opposing starter.
