Baltimore -1½ +240 over Philadelphia

Shane Baz (RHP - Baltimore, 3.98 ERA)

Cristopher Sánchez (LHP - Philadelphia, 2.74 ERA)

7:05 PM EST. Cristopher Sánchez has been one of the National League's better starters this season, but his recent form hasn't matched the sparkling ERA. Over the past month, his 3.21 xERA remains strong, yet the results have been weighed down by an increase in hard contact and a sudden rise in home runs allowed. The strikeout ability hasn't disappeared, as he's still carrying an elite 27% strikeout rate, a 16.2% swinging-strike rate, and a K/9 pushing 10.5 while maintaining excellent control. The concern is that mistakes in the strike zone have become much more costly, and that's a dangerous trend in a hitter-friendly environment.

Shane Baz has quietly put together another solid campaign with underlying numbers that support continued success. His xERA sits in line with his traditional ERA, while his strikeout rate remains comfortably above a batter per inning with a K/9 around 9.5. Baz has also trimmed his walk rate to roughly 2.5 BB/9, allowing him to attack hitters early and work ahead in counts. His fastball-slider combination continues to generate plenty of empty swings, and his command has taken a noticeable step forward as the season has progressed.

The price attached to Baltimore on the reverse run line is exactly why this wager deserves attention. The market is understandably giving Sánchez plenty of respect, but the gap between these two starters isn't nearly as wide as the odds imply. Baltimore has enough power throughout the lineup to capitalize on Sánchez's recent home-run issues, while Baz has the swing-and-miss arsenal to neutralize one of baseball's better offenses. Laying the extra run and a half at a generous plus price is a calculated gamble worth making. Baltimore has the pitching to stay in control, the offense to create separation late, and the value to justify chasing the bigger payout. A  big dog at home-Yes please! Win or lose this one, we love the action.
