Chicago -1½ +195 over Milwaukee

7:15 PM EST. Kevin Gausman (RHP- CHC, 4.53 ERA) takes the mound for Chicago against Logan Henderson (RHP- MIL, 2.49 ERA) of Milwaukee. Henderson owns the much better ERA, but this is exactly the type of matchup where the surface number can make the road favorite look considerably stronger than the actual pitching gap. Gausman has been inconsistent in the results department, yet his strikeout ability remains a major part of his profile and gives Chicago a much better foundation than his recent ERA would indicate.

Henderson has been excellent at preventing runs, but the price attached to Milwaukee is asking us to put a great deal of faith in that 2.49 ERA continuing at the same level. Chicago gets Gausman at home, and the veteran right-hander still brings the ability to generate swings and misses without relying entirely on batted-ball fortune. The Cubs do not need to establish a huge pitching advantage here; they need Gausman to perform closer to his underlying ability than his recent run-prevention results suggest.

We are getting a beefed-up number with the Cubs at home against a Milwaukee starter whose ERA creates the appearance of a much wider pitching mismatch than actually exists. Gausman's current strikeout rate gives him a path to neutralizing Milwaukee's lineup, while Henderson's 2.49 ERA leaves very little room between his actual results and the expectations being placed on him by the betting market.

This is a classic value position on the home underdog. Milwaukee has the prettier starting-pitching number, but Chicago has the more experienced arm and the advantage of playing at home, while the reverse run line gives us substantial compensation for taking the Cubs. We are takingChicago on the reverse run line with the beefed-up number. Gausman's strikeout ability makes him dangerous in this spot, Henderson is being priced off an outstanding ERA, and the number attached to the Cubs is simply too attractive to pass up.
