Detroit +110 over Toronto

7:07 PM EST. Troy Melton (RHP- DET, 2.42 ERA) gets the ball for Detroit against José Soriano (RHP- TOR, 3.48 ERA) of Toronto. Melton has been excellent from a run-prevention standpoint, but the more important point for this matchup is that the underlying numbers remain respectable. He owns a 3.84 xERA, 4.05 FIP, 7.25 K/9 and 2.50 BB/9, while limiting opponents to a 1.05 WHIP. The strikeout rate isn't elite, but Melton has done a very good job of preventing free baserunners and keeping damage contained.

Soriano's 3.48 ERA looks good, yet his supporting numbers give Detroit plenty to work with. His xERA is 3.81, accompanied by a 3.92 FIP and 3.82 xFIP. He is striking out 7.6 hitters per nine innings while walking 3.3, and that 2.3-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio is hardly overpowering. The bigger concern is the traffic: Soriano's 1.28 WHIP and 10.4% walk rate leave considerably more opportunity for an offense to string together rallies.

Melton has also been pitching effectively enough lately to make the plus-money price on Detroit appealing. His recent workload has included several strong outings, and his ability to work deep enough into games gives the Tigers a chance to keep the contest away from excessive bullpen exposure. He has allowed only one earned run in each of his two appearances against Minnesota immediately preceding this matchup, with his most recent start producing five-plus innings and three strikeouts.

This is the type of game where the betting price matters more than the home-field label. Toronto has the more attractive ERA on the surface, but the underlying pitching numbers are much closer than the moneyline suggests. Detroit has the better current run-prevention profile in Melton, and Soriano's combination of walks, WHIP and merely average strikeout production leaves room for the Tigers' lineup to create pressure. We don't need Detroit to dominate Toronto; we need the Tigers to take advantage of a very playable pitching matchup at plus money.
