Tarleton State +110 over Bowling Green

12:00 PM EST. Sometimes the number tells the story before we even get to the football. Bowling Green is the recognizable FBS name playing at home against Tarleton State, a school most casual bettors couldn't locate on a map. So why did Bowling Green open as only a 1½-point favorite? That's the question that matters. If the Falcons were clearly the superior side, oddsmakers could have hung -4 or -5 and the public would've happily laid it. Instead, they opened -1½. The market has since pushed Bowling Green out to -2½, which makes perfect sense because the familiar name at home is always going to attract money. We believe the original number was telling us something.

Tarleton State may be anonymous to the masses, but this isn't some helpless FCS program arriving to collect a cheque. The Texans went 12-2 last season, reached the FCS quarterfinals and then announced themselves against FBS competition by going into Army and winning 30-27. Todd Whitten's club outgained opponents by an average of 126 yards per game last year and scored 594 points, or more than 42 per game. Yes, the roster underwent a massive reconstruction, but Whitten didn't simply replace bodies—he brought in an enormous collection of experienced transfers. We got our first look last week and the offense immediately hung 49 points, with Kaden Anderson throwing three touchdowns and Tylan Hines ripping off 184 yards on the ground. Tarleton already has a game under its belt while Bowling Green is about to find out what its rebuilt roster looks like when the bullets start flying.

Meanwhile, there is a tremendous amount of projection being attached to Bowling Green simply because it is the FBS team. The Falcons were 4-8 and outgained by 36 yards per game last season, and they're hardly bringing back an experienced group. All five starting offensive linemen are gone, as are their top six receivers and seven of their top eight tacklers. More than half the current roster consists of first-year Falcons, and new starting quarterback Jay Kastantin arrives from Division II. Eddie George may ultimately have this program headed in the right direction, but laying points with a team replacing that much production in its season opener requires us to make an awful lot of assumptions. Bowling Green's 7-17-1 ATS record as a home favorite doesn't exactly encourage us to pay for those assumptions either.

This is where knowing the difference between a name and a price becomes so important. Put “Tarleton State” on the jersey of a recognizable FBS program with the same personnel and résumé and we're convinced this number looks very different. Instead, the market sees FCS Tarleton traveling north to play FBS Bowling Green and instinctively gravitates toward the Falcons. That's fine with us. We see a dangerous, battle-tested underdog that has already proven it can walk into an FBS stadium and win, facing a highly inexperienced favorite making its season debut. We don't want the +2½. We're calling the upset outright and taking the better return.
