Rutgers +3 -110 over Boston College

7:30 PM EST. If you're looking for Rutgers supporters tonight, you might need to organize a search party. The Scarlet Knights just lost 37-21 at home to UMass as roughly a 29-point favorite, and it wasn't some fluky result involving six turnovers and a blocked punt returned off somebody's helmet. Rutgers got its ass kicked. UMass pushed them around, Rutgers couldn't run the football, Dylan Lonergan threw three interceptions and Greg Schiano admitted afterward that his team wasn't properly prepared. It was about as humiliating an opening performance as a program could produce. Naturally, the conclusion now is that Rutgers is radioactive. Perfect. We'll take +3½.

Here's the question we can't get past: What would this line be if Rutgers had beaten UMass 38-10? Before last week's games were completed, Rutgers was reportedly being priced around -6½ in this matchup. Now Boston College is favored. That's roughly a 10-point adjustment in one week based overwhelmingly on one football game. One. Rutgers didn't suddenly lose 20 starters. Its entire roster didn't disappear. We simply learned that the Scarlet Knights played an atrocious game. If we're going to allow one September result to completely redefine what we thought we knew about a team, we're going to spend the entire season chasing last week's scores.

And it's not as though Boston College came out and announced itself as some emerging powerhouse. The Eagles lost 34-15 to Cincinnati, managed seven meaningful points before garbage time and had plenty of their own problems. Yet tonight BC suddenly gets promoted from projected underdog to favorite because Rutgers embarrassed itself more spectacularly. That's classic market psychology. Boston College isn't being bought because everybody suddenly loves Boston College. It's being bought because nobody can stomach Rutgers. There's a huge difference. The easiest handicap on the board is to look at that UMass score, laugh at Rutgers and lay the points with BC. We're going the other way.

This is precisely the type of overreaction we want to attack, and we're making Rutgers a big play. Last week's disaster is doing all the heavy lifting here. Everybody saw it, everybody remembers it and seemingly every newsletter and tout sheet has another reason why Rutgers is finished. Fine. Let them pile on. The spread is the great equalizer, and the market has taken Rutgers from favorite to +3½ in the blink of an eye. We're buying the Scarlet Knights after the crash, not before it. If Rutgers is truly as awful as it looked last week, we'll pay to find out. But we're not going to confuse one horrendous performance with a permanent 10-point change in value.
