Buffalo +3 over Chicago
Soldier Field, Chicago, IL
8:00 PM ET. The Bears are the hype team of the offseason — new coach, new quarterback, new identity — but the market’s gotten way out in front of itself. It’s Week 2 of the preseason, and Chicago is laying points against one of the most well-run organizations in the league.
Whether Caleb Williams plays a few snaps or a few series doesn’t really matter. These are glorified walkthroughs, and Buffalo treats them accordingly. Josh Allen won’t play much — if at all — but the drop-off to Mitch Trubisky or Mike White isn’t what the line implies. Both QBs are seasoned vets with live arms and experience running NFL offenses.
Trubisky, in particular, will have a little extra juice for this one. He’s back in Chicago, where his career began and never really got off the ground. The offense moved well under him last week against the Giants, and that was without Buffalo’s top unit or full playbook.
This is also a straight-up fade of the Bears’ depth. If Williams does play, he’s a rookie with a revamped O-line and no proven success yet. If he doesn’t, we’re looking at Tyson Bagent, Brett Rypien, and undrafted rookie Austin Reed to carry the load.
Bagent is gritty, but he’s also a former D-II quarterback with limited arm talent. He can move around and make plays when things break down, but sustaining drives is a different ask.
Chicago may open with their starters, but this isn't about who wins the first quarter. It’s about who wins the final 45 minutes — and that’s Buffalo more often than not. Sean McDermott has consistently had his team ready to play in August, and we’re getting points against a team that hasn't earned this level of respect.
