9:40 PM EST. Brandon Pfaadt is giving Arizona exactly what it needs at the front of this matchup. The 2.93 ERA is the headline number, but the more important part for this handicap is the quality of his current work underneath it. Pfaadt has been able to generate swings and misses without putting himself into constant trouble, and that gives Arizona the type of starting-pitching foundation we want when laying a larger run-line price.

Aaron Nola's 5.03 ERA puts Philadelphia in a much different position. The veteran right-hander has not been able to match Pfaadt's current run prevention, and the underlying indicators do not give us enough reason to dismiss the difference. Nola's strikeout ability remains part of his profile, but the combination of run prevention and current form makes it difficult to justify treating these two starters as comparable arms today.

That is the reason we are comfortable laying the bigger number with Arizona. We are not looking for the Diamondbacks to squeak out a one-run victory and leave us sweating through the final innings. The pitching matchup gives Arizona a legitimate opportunity to establish control early, and the home club has the better position to dictate the terms of this game from the outset.

Philadelphia is being asked to overcome a meaningful disadvantage on the mound, while Arizona is putting a starter in position to protect an early lead and turn this into the type of game we want when playing a dog on the reverse run line. We are taking the big number with Arizona. Pfaadt is the icing on the cake, and the Diamondbacks are our side today.
