St. John’s -9½ -110 over Northern Iowa

Viejas Arena – San Diego, CA

7:10 PM EST. This is a March Madness overreaction spot where the market thinks it’s being sharp, but it’s actually just following the same recycled narrative. The line opened higher and got bet down, and now everyone is lining up to grab Northern Iowa because of pace. You’re going to hear the same thing everywhere — “they slow it down,” “they limit possessions,” “they can hang around.” That’s not analysis — that’s noise. Pace alone doesn’t keep you in a game if you can’t score or compete physically.

Let’s start with Northern Iowa. This is a team that, quite frankly, isn’t even supposed to be here in the eyes of this level of competition. They haven’t faced anything close to what they’re about to see. Their offensive profile is average, their ability to generate second chances is poor, and they don’t get to the line. Now they run into a St. John’s team that is elite in those exact areas — attacking the glass, creating extra possessions, and applying relentless defensive pressure. Slowing the game down doesn’t matter when you’re losing every physical battle on the floor.

Now flip to St. John’s, and this is where the mismatch really shows up. This is not the same team from early in the season. Since early January, they’ve been one of the best teams in the country, ripping through opponents and stacking wins against legitimate competition. They’ve found their identity, and it starts with physical dominance, defensive intensity, and depth. Zuby Ejiofor is playing at an elite level, and the frontcourt as a whole is overwhelming teams on both ends. Northern Iowa simply does not have the size, strength, or depth to deal with that for 40 minutes.

And yes — Rick Pitino. Love him or hate him, the guy wins in March. He’s been in every situation imaginable, and this is exactly the type of spot where his teams are locked in. You can talk about the travel, the complaints, the theatrics — that’s all noise. What matters is that his team is prepared, disciplined, and peaking at the right time. Pitino isn’t letting his team sleepwalk into a 5 vs 12 trap. If anything, he’ll have them amped up from the opening tip.

At the end of the day, this is another case of inflated underdog perception versus discounted favorite value. The public sees “slow pace” and a trendy dog and assumes it’s close. It’s not. Northern Iowa doesn’t have the tools to compete in this matchup, and St. John’s has clear advantages across the board — physically, defensively, and in coaching. The number has come down, giving you a better price on the clearly superior team
