West Ham is not built to be a road favorite in the Premier League, especially not in early-season fixtures. They are, in fact, the poster child for a false favorite.

Their opponent, Sunderland, has clawed their way back from the football abyss. Relegated in 2017, they dropped as far as League One before orchestrating a dramatic return to the top flight. Their promotion campaign was something out of a movie: a stoppage-time equalizer against Coventry at home in the first leg of the semi-final, followed by an 88th-minute winner in the return leg. Then, at Wembley, down 1-0 with 15 minutes to go, Sunderland equalized and pulled off the improbable — a last-gasp winner from Tom Watson in the dying moments of stoppage time.

To the market, Sunderland are merely “lucky” to be here. To those in the North East and 49,000 strong inside the Stadium of Light, they are warriors. The Mackem Army will be foaming at the mouth to prove they belong. West Ham, meanwhile, must weather that storm with one eye already looking ahead to a massive derby at home against Chelsea in six days.
