Philadelphia -1½ +160 over Boston
6:45 PM EST. Jesús Luzardo (LHP - PHI) enters this matchup with an ugly-looking 5.86 ERA, but the underlying numbers suggest he has pitched far better than the surface stats indicate. Luzardo has been hurt badly by poor luck on balls in play, carrying an inflated .386 BABIP overall and an even worse .440 BABIP with runners in scoring position. Despite that, he’s producing some of the strongest swing-and-miss metrics of his career with a 15% swinging-strike rate while also improving his control dramatically with just a 6% walk rate. Luzardo is also generating ground balls at a career-best 47% clip, which is critical pitching at Fenway Park. Those are the indicators of a pitcher far more reliable than his ERA suggests and this could easily be a positive regression spot for the Phillies left-hander.
Ranger Suárez Ranger Suárez (LHP - BOS) has been excellent statistically with a 2.77 ERA, but Boston as a team has not played nearly as well as the market perception suggests. The Red Sox offense has cooled considerably over the past few weeks and enters this matchup with just a .658 OPS since late April. Boston has handled left-handed pitching reasonably well on paper, but much of that production has been inflated by an unsustainably high .332 BABIP. Meanwhile, Philadelphia continues to be one of the more disciplined offenses in baseball and the Phillies lineup has enough right-handed power to create problems against any lefty. Trea Turner, Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos have all been productive recently and Philadelphia remains dangerous in run-producing situations.
This feels like a strong value spot backing Philadelphia as a road underdog because the starting pitching matchup is much closer than the odds imply. Luzardo’s advanced numbers point toward improvement coming soon and Boston’s offense has not been nearly consistent enough to justify laying this type of price. The Phillies also have the more balanced lineup top-to-bottom and continue to profile as one of the better road offenses in baseball. If Luzardo keeps the ball on the ground and limits the free passes, Philadelphia should create enough scoring chances to win this game outright. With plus money attached and the underlying pitching metrics favoring a bounce-back performance, the Phillies are the side worth backing.
