6:40 PM EST. One of the most misleading statistics in baseball is a team's win-loss record. Over the course of a 162-game season, countless games are decided by nothing more than a bounce, a bad call, or bullpen variance. Tampa Bay and Texas are perfect examples. The Rays enter at 62-44 while the Rangers sit just three games over .500 at 55-52. On the surface, it looks like Tampa Bay has been the far superior club, but that perception doesn't match the underlying quality of these two teams.

Mackenzie Gore is another example of why surface numbers can be deceiving. His first half showcased the ace-level potential that evaluators have been waiting to see. Gore possesses frontline upside, and so we'll continue backing him when the market discounts that potential.

As of this writing, Tampa Bay has not announced a starting pitcher, but it doesn't change our opinion. This wager is about Texas, not the opposing starter. The Rangers remain one of the most undervalued teams in baseball, largely because the betting market continues to price them according to their record instead of their true talent level. That's creating value, and we'll continue backing Texas as an underdog whenever the opportunity presents itself.
